Cosmetic Sclerotherapy is a proven medical procedure used in the treatment of spider veins and occasionally varicose veins. It has been used since the 1930s and is performed in the office by our registered nurse Celeste, who has over 18 years of experience in cosmetic sclerotherapy.
Cosmetic sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution (typical agents used are; hypertonic saline, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, and Asclera) through a very fine needle directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessels, causing them to shrink and the blood to clot. The procedure itself takes approximately 30 minutes depending on the size and location of the veins.
Modern techniques such as foam sclerotherapy are the latest developments in this evolution. Cosmetic sclerotherapy is the “gold standard” and is preferred over laser for eliminating large spider veins (telangiectasia) and smaller varicose leg veins.
